New Books!

Oh, I love books. I think I have an addiction to them. I constantly buy new reads and pile them up on my shelf. I borrow or trade them with friends. There are more books now in my TBR pile than I can probably read in a year.

And yet I still keep buying them.

My most recent purchases include: Hex Marks The Spot by Madelyn Alt & For A Few Demons More by Kim Harrison (which I have already read from the library but need for my collection).

There are still dozens more that I want to buy and read, but too little money, too little time.

~sigh~

Well, I could always hope for a gift card to a bookstore for X-mas.

About writing a fantasy-based vampire:

For me, vampires were something that had been done on and off screen for so long that people often forgot their roots. These creatures were regarded as monsters that fed by night and slept by day. In every medium they were hulking brutes or small, seductive mistresses that preyed on women and men respectively. I grew tired of such cookie-cutter molds and thought vampires needed to be reinvented. Over the years, they became more varied; different settings, different conflicts, and different goals, but the rules always remained the same: fear the sun, hate the cross, and drink the blood. To an extent, these are still engaging details that make for a good story but I thought the entire formula was growing stale.

So I decided to place them in a fantasy setting.

What makes a vampire weak and strong? In folklore, their strengths are derived from evil (ie: Satan via the consumption of blood, the imagery of night, etc.) and their weaknesses come from God (ie: the Cross, the sun, holy water, etc.). So what happens when you place vampires in a fantasy setting where God and Satan as we know it do not apply?

You have to rewrite the rules. I still wanted them to have these same weaknesses and strengths, but I wanted a deeper, more poignant reason for them. It was my mission to give them a richer history and a more a believable existence. Also, it was my intention to create several ‘breeds’ of vampires rather than just your run-of-the-mil generic kind.

What I came up with was something unique. I’ve received great praise for my view of the vampire and how this fantasy-based creature has been breathed a new life.

Here is the excerpt:

She gritted her teeth, feeling every ounce of the anger for him rekindle. “I said—”

And that was all she got out. Lorne’s fingers snatched her throat—her painful, aching throat and lifted her against the wall, back rubbing the granite stones. For the first time in centuries, she felt what it was like to not be able to draw air—to have one’s throat closed and need it opened. This feeling of submission—of being at the mercy of someone was demoralizing and infuriating.

“I do not take orders from you anymore, Dyne. Do you understand that?” She clawed at his fingers but he didn’t budge. His face was turned in rage, water drenching him as it ran around his tight expression. Her feet kicked to no avail beneath her. This was a situation that she never thought she would be in. “Do you understand me, Dyne?” he repeated.

He had the advantage over her. This was obvious. Dyne was no more than a hundred and thirty pounds and her once enhanced strength was gone. But she had other talents and skills. In life, she trained longer—harder and when it came down to fighting, she proved time and again that she was capable of handling several such men on her own. She was better than he was and he knew it. He just needed to be reminded of it—here, today, in the pouring rain, twelve years later.

Her mind became focused even though she was on the brink of collapsing. She stopped flailing her legs and scraping at his fingers and placed her arms flush against the wall. With as much power as she could muster, she kicked him between the legs. That was all it took for his grip to loosen and drop her to the ground.

Lorne cried out in agony and fell to his knees, giving Dyne the opportunity she needed. Her fingers wrapped around his matted, drenched hair and pulled him back to deliver a violent blow straight across the jaw. His eyes clenched shut and she pounded him again, this time against the nose. Blood and water flew from her knuckles. The brute tried to get up—to gain the advantage on her again but she kicked his feet from beneath him, bringing him to his knees once again.

Dyne grabbed onto his shoulders and used him as leverage to flip over just as he tried to reach out and grab her. When she landed, she pulled his planted dagger from the muddy ground. Lorne found himself on his back, with Dyne straddling his chest, the blade held firmly across his neck. His face was bleeding profusely, running in pink streams across the granite porch. The thunder was approaching, just as she found her strength—her rage—her determination that made her who she was.

“Who gives the orders?” she screamed. Lorne failed to answer and she turned the blade so the hilt faced down and slammed it into the side of his head. He cried out in rattled pain. “Who gives the orders?” she yelled again.

“Y-you!” he submitted. He coughed a wet, sickly moan. Dyne’s teeth were clenched and her hands were shaking, but that was it. Her anger was at its peak. Its threshold was much higher when she was a vampire.

“Good.”

Let It Snow!

Okay, maybe not. Here in East Central Indiana we are expecting 6-10 inches of snow before morning. Don't get me wrong, I love snow--but not driving in it. I have work tomorrow and i'm calling in a favor with a friend who owns a huge-ass truck. Maybe he can get me to work. I can't afford to call off, even for bad weather.

Rewrites

I love doing rewrites. I love working on a story I have just completed and making it better, stronger. It gives me the opportunity to catch the things I might've missed before...and to correct any of the embarrassing mistakes I might have otherwise left in there.

It's weird, but as I was reading through the first few chapters of Changed, I was suddenly aware of how much my writing style has changed since I first began writing. I guess "Changed" is an aptly named work in that respect.

Anyway, I'm off to work on the rewrites and do some errands.

First Draft Complete

It feels like I've been working forever on Changed, but I am finally finished with the first draft. Nothing really compares to the feeling when you finish a story.

Next, rewrites.
